Northern Queensland
For lovers of adventure, the delightful area of Port Douglas, Cairns and Palm Cove in tropical North Queensland could not be better situated, as it is the perfect base from which to explore this stunning area of Australia. On Port Douglas’ doorstep are the Great Barrier Reef (to which there are many excursions from the village); the spectacular Atherton Tablelands and the magnificent rainforests of Daintree and Cape Tribulation.
Make no mistake, Port Douglas is pure class. Chic and ultra-stylish, the village has become something akin to an Aussie version of St. Tropez, attracting A-list celebrities to sample its considerable charms. Quite seriously, you never know who you may bump into in a Port Douglas street; why, it could even be ex-US president Bill Clinton, who loves the place!
Just 60km north of Cairns, Port Douglas has developed from a fairly anonymous, yet beautifully situated fishing village into a high class resort in just 20 years. Now boasting many of the plushest accommodation options in all of Australia, Port Douglas is blessed with the fantastic Four Mile Beach (go on, guess how long it is!) - a simply classic stretch of sand.
There are so many attractions and activities available in and around Port Douglas that you may not even be able to find time for that lovely constitutional! Perhaps you would like to try your hand at white water rafting and scuba diving, and maybe take a hot air balloon flight? We can certainly recommend one option for you, and that is a visit to Low Isles, 15km northeast of Port Douglas: This is a coral cay just 4 acres in size that presents the perfect vision of a desert island, and offers simply astonishing snorkelling. If you have never snorkelled before, this is the perfect place to start in crystal clear, shallow waters, where you are likely to encounter a psychedelic range of sea life including angelfish, rabbit fish, moon wrasse and sweetlips, all going about their business amongst gardens of beautiful coral. Crowd-free, it is a little piece of heaven you should not miss.
